wooooo party! wait… this is boring…

Posted by Jaret on July 6, 2008

I was at a party during 4th of July, and I was sitting on a chair utterly bored. I noticed something while I was spazzing at the sky, the music. I thought, wow the music kind of sets a mood throughout the party, It kind of makes you enjoy it. I was thinking, what would you think if you attended a party without music? Would it be extremely boring (it probably would), or what if it had some weird odd music that really doesn’t make a party mood. I don’t know about you but I sure as hell wouldn’t like a party without some sort of music.

Console RTS

Posted by Jaret on July 6, 2008

If theres one genre that everyone laughs at on the consoles, it will always be the Real Time Strategy. Down graded graphics, unit caps, bad controls, horrible interface, slowdowns, doesn’t feel natural, you name it. I’ve started from playing console RTS, from Starcraft 64, Command and Conquer 64, Command and Conquer: Red Alert Retaliation for the Playstation, moved up to Goblin Commander for the Xbox, Command and Conquer: Tiberium Wars for Xbox 360, then Universe at War and Supreme Commander for the Xbox 360 also. I did play Starcraft and C&C Red Alert on the PC and it was loads better control and graphically (even if they weren’t much of a attention getter) but thats not the point. Theres more to it then just ‘Mouse and Keyboard > the world.’

The first thing I want to touch apon is that most console gamers are looking for a fun game with a friend, not an epic game of extreme clicking back and forth to avoid losing. I noticed that some people I know would rather get onto a console and play after a busy day, then go to their computer to game. Its just so much easier than working a computer in my opinion. How does this relate to the topic? I really don’t know, but I will get to the message I’m trying to show.

Console gamers… really don’t find console RTS so difficult to control. I know I don’t, but when your trying to compare a controller with about 4 face buttons, two thumbsticks, two shoulder buttons and triggers to a keyboard, thats just unfair in many ways. You will have more control over the keyboard hands down, with with a controller its easier to just start the game up for the first time and play without RTFM’ing. It’s like going from an international supermodel to an apple pie, its just too different to be compared. When you go from PC controls to the console controls, you automatically expect it to be better or the same, which is near impossible. Console RTS developers aren’t trying to make the controls for the PC, they want to make it for the consoles.

Console RTS graphics are usually a generation behind the computer version, but it has to compensate for how very little processing power and video memory a console has. I find it amazing how the can transfer a PC slayer like Supreme Commander to play on such a weak system. Yeah this isn’t without the cost of looks and the “LOL” unit cap, but I’m happy to be able to experience the gameplay even if its nothing near the PC experience. A lot of people complain how the graphics suck on the console based RTS’s, but then again Starcraft graphics aren’t exactly what I was expecting either. People on the console want the nicest looking game, so this really does cloud the whole ‘gameplay is what actually makes a game’ in my opinion.

I could go on, but I don’t what else I could add. For all those people that bash console RTS to dust, you should atleast play the game before assuming that it sucks as soon as you see for the (console name.)
